Spring 2026
Moonpie's Girls

Spring is always a busy time on the farm!
Recovering from winters wild weather! Fixing damage; coming out of hibernation and getting ready for everything starting to grow again as the days start to draw out once more.
It is also lambing time. When most are tucked up in their beds; I am out in the sheep shed, checking for signs of ewes lambing and helping anyone that may need it. Lambing sheep is a roller coaster ride of emotions. The elation of a ewe with her lambs safely born, up on their feet suckling is hard to surpass. But there are also the lows. They often come in the middle of the night, when no one else is around: A ewe not being able to lamb herself; a ewe lambing who shouldn't be for a few more weeks; a ewe who hates her lambs and won't let them anywhere near her; a ewe having more than twins; a lamb who is ill and you can't figure out what is wrong. The list is endless, and we had all of these and more this year. But somehow we got there...... with help! Farmers spend a lot of time on their own with no one to talk to, and mental wellbeing is a big concern in the farming community. But there is always someone out there. To lend an ear; a hand; make a cuppa, and somehow it's not as bad as you thought! We are also really lucky to have a fantastic team of vets close by for the support needed. Though my flock is very good at making them scratch their heads! "oh, I've never seen that before" is associated with my flock. All of the flock lambed in 3 weeks....except Moonpie! She had other ideas. 6 weeks after all the other ewes were happily out in the fields with their lambs, Moonpie was still inside the sheda dn not eating properly! So we put her out in the field with another ewe who didn't have lambs so she could stretch her legs, eat grass and hopefully kick start labour. Sure enough, 3 days later. 2 beautiful (tiny) ewe lambs were born. Thank goodness!!! I can get some real sleep now.

Winter 2025/26

Well this winter was one of the toughest we've ever had to cope with. Deep, deep snow just kept falling making everything really challenging and hard work for humans and sheep. With our sheep spread all over the area, we had to dig out tracks to each flock every time we went out to feed them (twice a day). No sooner had we dug out tracks to the sheep, they were covered again! We put out more hay bales this year than we ever have and had to buy extra feed from a local supplier as our normal delivery HGV couldn't get to us. But that's what has to be done when you have livestock. A few of our close neighbours needed our help too as they didn't have big machines to get them out....we are more than happy to help!

After the snow, came the melt and 34 days of continual rain.....which then led to flooding! All of the outbuildings and yard were under water. Luckily we have our hay and straw lifted off the ground up onto pallets, so that wasn't ruined. Growing rice seemed to be a better option than sheep at this point! But eventually it stopped, and we started to dry out. All of the flocks were brought to close to the farm and preparation started for lambing time in the spring.

We did manage to launch our new clothing line...something positive! Our gorgeous wool; now turned into stunning, classic knitwear for all the seasons. All designed by us for everyday wear and handmade. Our environmentally friendly, sustainable knitwear is made to last with love......hope you love it as much as we do!

Summer 2025
,

A super summer, helped the lambs grow and make us all feel wonderful. It did have its challenges, as the grass didn't grow as well as usual due to the lack of rain and had to top up feed with hay, which is meant for winter. Believe it or not, we had less rainfall than most of the UK! Hoping that the winter won't be too harsh for us! We attended lots of shows and demonstrated the amazing versatile properties of wool. We also launched our new summer clothing line which was an exceptionally proud moment for us all.

Spring 2025

Lambing season is finally over and we can reflect on how our girls did. Seeing the families outside, thriving is what the long hours throughout the day and night are for, and it makes it all worth while. We had some surprise triplets which waited right until the end to arrive! But they are doing well and are together with the cade lambs, and loving being out on the beautiful green grass. We now look forwards to clipping and show season, where we will be out and about showing you all what beautiful new hand knitted designs and items we have been working on throughout winter!.

Last orders for Christmas 2024!

Today, 16.12.24 is the last chance you've got to get your order in......! We have some stock left but not a great deal so bear with us if we are our of something that you would like. But we will do our best and hopefully have an alternative.

Spring 2024

It was a very challenging springtime! Rain, cold and wild winds made everything difficult. Fields were not recovering with the wet conditions, and the sheep were struggling. So we made the decision.....and came inside a little earlier than we would like, but we had to think about what was to come. Eventually the ewes began to lamb and the weather started to improve. The Suffolk and the Suffolk crosses lambed first under the careful watch of Sarah. All did very well, even the first timers; and with lots of sleepless nights and plenty of coffee; we got through the first batch without too many losses. This is part of keeping sheep that gives the highest highs and the lowest lows, but we will always do our very best and to try and make sure they get the best possible care. The Shetlands lamb later and outside to try and give me a little rest between lambing times, but that didn’t happen! So 6 weeks, turned into 10 weeks! With the weather improving, the Shetlands did very well and lambed outside. A few needed a helping hand and an overnight stop inside to make sure all was well. So now we look forward to the summer. Growing healthy lambs; Making feed for winter and designing new items and patterns for 2024.
